ETFGI reports assets invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe reached a new milestone of US$1.28 trillion at the end of 2020

 

LONDONJanuary 19, 2020 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs and ETPs ecosystem, reported today that assets invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe reached a new milestone of US$1.28 trillion at the end of 2020.  Assets invested in the European ETFs/ETPs industry increased by 24.5% in 2020. During December ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of US$27.17 billion, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$119.93 billion which is less than the US$125.18 billion in net inflows gathered in 2019, according to ETFGI's December 2020 European ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)


Highlights

  • ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe reach a new milestone of $1.28 trillion at the end of 2020.
  • Assets invested in the European ETFs and ETPs industry grew by 24.5% in 2020.
  • The $119.93 billion in net inflows gathered in 2020 was less than the $125.18 billion in net inflows gathered in 2019.
  • Equity ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe followed by fixed income attracted the highest net inflows during 2020 with $62.48 billion and $40.97 billion respectively.
     

The S&P 500® was up 3.8% for December and finished the year at an all-time high, having added 18.4% the year.  Developed ex-U.S. gained 5.5% during December, concluding 2020 up 11.1%.  The S&P Emerging BMI gained 6.1% during December, finishing 2020 up 15.5%. Emerging BMI gained 6.1% during December, and finished 2020 up 15.5%. According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder and owner of ETFGI.

 

Europe ETFs and ETPs asset growth at the end of December 2020

 

The European ETF/ETP industry had 2,308 ETFs/ETPs, with 8,857 listings, assets of $1.28 Tn, from 77 providers listed on 29 exchanges in 24 countries at the end of 2020 .

Equity ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of $21.61 billion during December, bringing net inflows for 2020 to $62.48 billion, higher than the $51.72 billion in net inflows equity products had in 2019. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe had net inflows of $5.58 billion during December, taking net inflows for 2020 to $40.97 billion, lower than the $61.02 billion in net inflows fixed income products had in 2019. Commodity ETFs/ETPs reported $604 million in net outflows bringing net inflows to $15.68 billion for 2020, which is much higher than the $8.69 billion in net inflows gathered in 2019.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $12.53 billion during December. iShares MSCI World Small Cap UCITS ETF (WLDS LN) gathered $1.17 billion alone.
