ETFGI reports ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe gathered a record US$155 billion in the first 9 months of 2021
LONDON —October 20, 2021 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs and ETPs ecosystem, reported today that ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe gathered a record US$154.60 billion in the first 9 months of 2021. YTD 2021 net inflows are $35 billion greater than the $119.93 Bn gathered in full year 2020. Net inflows of US$15.06 billion were gathered during September, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$154.60 billion. Assets invested in the European ETFs/ETPs industry have decreased by 2.7%, from US$1.54 trillion at the end of August, to US$1.50 trillion, according to ETFGI's September 2021 European ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of the annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)
- Assets of $1.50 trillion invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe at the end of September 2021 are the third highest on record.
- Record YTD 2021 net inflows of $154.60 Bn beating the prior record of $85.53 Bn gathered in YTD 2017.
- $154.60 Bn YTD net inflows are $35 Bn over full year 2020 record net inflows $119.93 Bn.
- $206.3 billion in net inflows gathered in the past 12 months.
- Assets increased 16.9% YTD in 2021, going from US$1.28 trillion at end of 2020, to US$1.54 trillion.
- 18th month of consecutive net inflows
- Equity ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe gathered a record $110.23 Bn in YTD net inflows 2021.
“The S&P 500 declined 4.65% in September as due to fears of inflation, the ongoing Congressional budget impasse, and anticipation of a reduction in Fed liquidity provision. Developed markets ex-U.S. declined 2.99% and emerging markets were down 3.12% in September.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder and owner of ETFGI.
Europe ETFs and ETPs asset growth as at the end of September 2021
The European ETFs and ETPs industry had 2,516 products with 9,845 listings, assets of $1,50 Tn, from 86 providers listed on 29 exchanges in 24 countries at the end of September.
Equity ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of $8.85 Bn during September, bringing net inflows for the year 2021 to $110.23 Bn, much higher than the $18.88 Bn in net inflows equity products had attracted year to date in 2020. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe had net inflows of $5.65 Bn during September, taking net inflows for the year to $33.72 Bn, less than the $31.02 Bn in net inflows fixed income products had reported at this point in 2020. Commodity ETFs/ETPs reported $698 Mn in net outflows, bringing net inflows to $2.33 Bn for 2021, which is lower than the $18.28 Bn in net inflows gathered over the same period in 2020. Active ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of $896 Mn, bringing net inflows for the year 2021 to $5.08 Bn, significantly higher than the $409 Mn in net inflows active products had attracted year to date in 2020.
Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $9.47 Bn during September. iShares Core S&P 500 UCITS ETF - Acc (CSSPX SW) gathered $1.83 Bn the largest individual net inflow.
