ETFGI reports record net inflows of US$183 billion into ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe at the end of November 2021

LONDON —December 16, 2021 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs/ETPs ecosystem, reported today that ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of US$16.55 billion during November, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$183.36 billion. Assets invested in the European ETFs/ETPs industry have decreased by 1.1%, from US$1.57 trillion at the end of October, to US$1.55 trillion, according to ETFGI's November 2021 European ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

Highlights 

  • Record YTD 2021 net inflows of $183.36 Bn beating the prior record of $106.44 Bn gathered in YTD 2017. 

  • $183.36 Bn YTD net inflows are $63.43 Bn over full year 2020 record net inflows $119.93 Bn.  

  • $210.53 billion in net inflows gathered in the past 12 months. 

  • Assets of $1.55 trillion invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe at the end of November 2021 are the 2nd highest on record. 

  • Assets increased 20.8% YTD in 2021, going from US$1.28 trillion at end of 2020, to US$1.55 trillion. 

  • 20th month of consecutive net inflows 

  • Equity ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe gathered a record $131.58 Bn in YTD net inflows 2021. 

“Due to the growing threat of a new COVID variant Omicron, the S&P 500 declined 0.69% in November, however, the index is up 23.18% year to date. Developed markets, excluding the US, experienced a fall of 4.94% in November. Israel (down 1.03%) and the US (down 1.47%) experienced the smallest losses among the developed markets in November, while Luxembourg suffered the biggest loss of 16.90%. Emerging markets declined 3.53% during November. United Arab Emirates (up 8.15%) and Chile (up 5.51%) gained the most, whilst Turkey (down 13.72%) and Poland (down 11.95%) witnessed the largest declines.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder and owner of ETFGI.

At the end of November 2021, the European ETFs and ETPs industry had 2,551 products, with 10,015 listings, assets of $1.551 trillion, from 87 providers listed on 29 exchanges in 24 countries. 

Equity ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of $10.12 Bn during November, bringing net inflows for the year 2021 to $131.58 Bn, much higher than the $40.98 Bn in net inflows equity products had attracted year to date in 2020. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe had net inflows of $5.37 Bn during November, taking net inflows for the year to $40.23 Bn, greater than the $35.42 Bn in net inflows fixed income products had reported at this point in 2020. Commodity ETFs/ETPs reported $36 Mn in net inflows, bringing net inflows to $1.65 Bn for 2021, which is lower than the $16.29 Bn in net inflows gathered over the same period in 2020. Active ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of $557 Mn, bringing net inflows for the year 2021 to $5.47 Bn, significantly higher than the $803 Mn in net inflows active products had attracted year to date in 2020. 

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $7.95 Bn during November. iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF - Acc (IWDA LN) gathered $857 Mn the largest individual net inflow.
